Introducing Hello Quay Podcast
StacyWelcome to Hello Kwey . Let's Talk Education , a podcast where Indigenous and non-Indigenous voices from across Quebec come together to share knowledge and experiences related to education . In each episode , you'll encounter new perspectives that we hope will enrich your practice and deepen your connection to your communities . I am one of your hosts , Stacey Allen , and in this inaugural episode , Daphna and I will be talking a bit about our personal journeys into this work and our aspirations for this podcast . So welcome everyone . I am so incredibly excited to kick off this new podcasting adventure . I am joined today with my co-host , Daphna , a consultant for the RÉCIT Provincial Service for the First Nations and Inuit in Quebec . Daphna , I want to start by saying thank you for joining me on this new adventure , by saying thank you for joining me on this new adventure . I am super excited about collaborating with you, and I look forward to speaking with the exciting lineup of guests we have planned .
DaphnaSo happy to be here with you , Stacey , Tell me
Stacey's Path to Truth and Reconciliation
Daphnawhat inspired you to start this podcast .
StacyThat's a great question . So the idea came from my colleague , Chris Colley , who has been producing the Shift Ed podcast at Learn Now since 2020 . And Chris is like a podcast expert . He has over 70 episodes now and if you haven't checked it out , I really suggest you tune in . But towards the end of last year , Chris approached me with the idea for this podcast , mentioning that there is a lot of educators in Quebec doing some amazing work towards truth and reconciliation , but we don't have a platform yet where we can share that amazing work that is being done . So that's the idea behind the creation of this podcast .
DaphnaStacey , I'm curious what first inspired you to work in the area of truth and reconciliation ?
StacyThat's a great question , Daphna . So I grew up in rural Nova Scotia . I'm non-Indigenous and growing up I didn't learn much about First Nations and Inuit and Métis and it really wasn't until I began working in Nunavik at Katowice School Board that I began learning about truth and reconciliation and the role that education plays in our lives , and that experience in Nunavik has really sparked questions for me related to why I didn't learn more about First Nations and Inuit and Métis in schools and what were some of the current realities like in Indigenous communities , which has kind of led to where I am now working at LEARN as Provincial Receipt Consultant for the Anglophone School Board and working on initiatives like this podcast to better support Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth in learning related to Indigenous histories and cultures . Daphna , how did you get started ?
Daphna's Journey in Indigenous Education
DaphnaSo I grew up in a multicultural neighborhood in Montreal , but I didn't have much exposure to Indigenous cultures . Later on in life , through my work in the visual arts and by meeting Indigenous artists , I started learning about the challenges faced by First Nations and Inuit communities . It's only today , in my role at the RECI , that I have really the chance to support teachers and consultants who work in Indigenous education . It's very meaningful work that I'm very proud to be part of and join you in collaborating , stacey .
StacyThanks for sharing . You know . Pathways into this work I think are so unique and personal and I think it's really important for all educators to reflect a bit on our personal journeys and what kind of histories and biases we bring with us into our classrooms and our work histories and biases we bring with us into our classrooms and our work .
Hopes and Vision for Listeners
DaphnaSo , to go back to the intention of the podcast , what do you hope our listeners will gain by tuning in ?
StacyThat's a great question . I hope to bring them conversations about the incredible work that's happening around us , because there's some really truly amazing projects that are happening in Quebec and the idea is that hopefully we can listen to those projects and the powerful perspectives of educators across the province to collectively improve education for all youth in Quebec and to work towards the calls to action in a tangible way . So , on that note , I'm very glad that you all tuned in and I hope that you will join us next time as we continue to explore this journey towards truth and reconciliation and education together .
